Constitution and Citizenship Day
Date:
September 17, 2025

Each year on September 17, our nation comes together to celebrate Constitution and Citizenship Day. This day marks the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787, a document that continues to shape our democracy and affirm the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Constitution and Citizenship Day goes beyond a historical observance; it is an opportunity for schools to inspire civic pride and an opportunity to encourage students to connect history with the present, reflect on the values of freedom and equality, and consider how they can contribute to a stronger and more inclusive democracy.

Pursuant to federal law (Public Law 108-447, Section 111), all educational institutions receiving federal funds are required to hold an educational program about the United States Constitution on September 17, known nationally as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. If September 17 falls on a weekend or holiday, schools may commemorate the day during the preceding or following week. The Constitution is both our founding document and a living framework that guides our shared civic life. Constitution Day provides a meaningful opportunity to connect civic learning with the 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ Portrait of a Graduate. Exploring the Constitution allows students to strengthen academic knowledge, think critically about democratic principles, communicate and debate diverse perspectives, and apply creative problem-solving to contemporary challenges. By embedding constitutional values in both local and global contexts, students grow as reflective, future-focused global citizens equipped to contribute thoughtfully and responsibly to our democracy.

Schools are encouraged to plan meaningful programming the week of September 17. Constitution Day is more than an observance, it is an opportunity to connect history to the future, helping 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ graduates become prepared, thoughtful, and engaged citizens ready to contribute to our democracy. The following freely available resources support schools, educators and communities in celebrating Constitution and Citizenship Day.
