A "Powerful Week" at Silver Creek: Western New York School District Recognized for "Exemplary" Work with Land Acknowledgements, Regents Presentations, Participation in Seals of Civic Readiness and Biliteracy, and More
Assistant Commissioner David Frank recently visited Silver Creek Central School District, located in Chautauqua County in western New York, and applauded the district for its "exemplary" work in regionalization, the 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ Portrait of a Graduate, the New York Inspires Plan, and the NYSED Seals of Civic Readiness and Biliteracy.Ìý
Representatives from Silver Creek CSD recently presented to the 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ Board of Regents in October 2025 to share the inspiring work that students, staff, and administrators accomplished through the Office of Indigenous Education’s Youth Service Grants (see Teacher Resources page for more information about the grants); these representatives included Superintendent Dr. Katie Ralston; Michelle Helmer, the director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology; Amanda Austin, the Native American Education Program Coordinator, and Ella Austin, a recent graduate of Silver Creek CSD and Amanda Austin's daughter. Ella participated in NYSED's Seal of Civic Readiness initiative before her graduation from Silver Creek by writing several land acknowledgments for use by the Silver Creek CSD, each one adjusted for different contexts and audiences. The Silver Creek Board of Education itself adopted one of her land acknowledgements as part of its standard opening for all of its regular and special meetings beginning in June 2025. Additionally, Ella wrote a statewide land acknowledgement that was presented to and adopted by the 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ Board of Regents for reading at all future meetings.Ìý
