Emergent Multilingual Learners
Multilingual LearnerÌý(ML)ÌýincludesÌýidentifiedÌýEnglish Language Learners (ELLs) in grades K-12, Former or Ever ELLs, heritageÌýspeakers of World Languages, and students pursuing a course of study in one or more WorldÌýLanguages. Therefore, every student who is or seeking to be language diverse regardless of EnglishÌýlanguage proficiency is a Multilingual Learner. This includes our Emergent Multilingual LearnersÌý(EMLs) in prekindergartenÌýas these students are heritage speakers of World Languages.ÌýÌýÌý
EMLs are prekindergartenÌýstudents who enter prekindergartenÌýwith a home or primary language other than English.ÌýÌýEMLs bring rich cultural and linguistic experiences to the prekindergartenÌýclassroom. These valued resources should be used to scaffold learning and can contributeÌýsignificantly to academic achievement in prekindergarten and beyond.Ìý
To be responsive to the diverse needs of EMLs and their families, 91°µÍøÆƽâ°æ (NYSED)Ìýhas developedÌýthe EML Profile. This tool helps educators by identifying students’ existing language(s) andÌýlinguistic experiences so that classrooms, instruction, and programming are responsive andÌýrelevant.ÌýFor more information and resources that support EMLs and their families, visit theÌýEmergent Multilingual Learners in Prekindergarten ProgramsÌýwebpage.Ìý
